I got the chance to try an interesting piece of software recently. CardRecoveryPro claims to be able to recover files that have been deleted from a memory card. The software also claims to be able to recover these files from a card that has been formatted as well. Recovering deleted files is one thing, but actually recovering files from a format is an entirely different ball-game.

So, of course, I went ahead to test these claims.

The first test involved recovery of deleted files. So I took a spare SD card, put on a few pictures and promptly placed them all in the trash. I started up the software, pointed it to the card to be recovered and let it work its magic. It quickly (in minutes) recovered the files that had been deleted and even most, if not all, of the files that had been on the card in the past.

Cool! It passed the first test.

The second test involved a format of the card. After loading the card with the same trusty pictures, I proceeded to blow it up, or more technically, reformat it.

Okay, so lets see if CardRecoveryPro can actually do what it claims…

As before, I started up the program. This time, however, I opted for the full, in depth, scan. This time it wasn’t quite so fast. That’s not to say that it took an unexpected amount of time, just a bit longer than before. Then…BAM!… the pictures from this reformatted drive were displayed on screen. All of them, along with many of the old lot as well that had gone through who knows how many formats and deletes, were there.

So it is safe to say this little piece of software works. And quite well, I might add. While I have yet to try this with other file types besides photos, I would imagine it would do just as well with music and video, both which are supported. For this case I used an old SD card, and put the software on ‘General Digital Camera’ mode. But I would expect that all supported card types should work about the same.

One issue I do have with this software is its relatively hefty price tag. It comes in at $39.98 and a few dollars more if you buy the ‘Lifetime’ license, which is probably worth it for most users. That said, I imagine it is worth it if you have important files to recover. Because if you do, this will probably do the trick.

I recently stumbled across an interesting concept: Postloop.

Essentially, new website owners sign up in order to get decent quality posts to their forum or blog. By increasing activity it is more inviting for other members to join and contribute.

So where do I come in? By making posts on these new websites and blogs Postloop users earn points that can be converted to cash. Obviously, I enjoy writing and contributing to forums and blogs already, so getting a little bit of money to do something I already do is a plus.

Will you get rich? No. But you can plausibly earn $5 every day or so, which is about an extra $100 a month for something most of us already do. So all in all it’s not a bad gig. And if you have a forum or blog of your own, you can simply convert your points in order to get posts on your own website.

You do have to go through an acceptance period of 10 posts, in which they will analyze your writing and contribution quality. Once accepted, you’re off to making a few bucks. This process is great because it means forum and blog owners will actually get quality posts because the writers are screened.

Unfortunately, if you are not a native English speaker or have poor grammar this may not be the gig for you.

Many products are available to help you clean up a PC. Some are even open-source or free. However, this product claims to be able to provide a vast array of functions in a single application. But will SmartPCFixer actually do everything it claims, such as fixing blue screens, lock-ups, and errors?

I used a client’s PC that had a few issues to test out the software–read as: majorly defraggmented, with registry and driver errors. It was fairly problematic, and would run quite slowly and often hang.

The first thing I noticed was that the software itself runs much like an anti-virus or anti-malware program. So the user interface was fairly intuitive and easy to use. I began a complete scan and we were off. When the results returned, I was able to use the software to fix the problems that it had discovered.

In this case, the toolset of SmartPCFixer worked fantastically and the computer is running like new… well almost; it is a few years old after all. Usually, I would have just reformatted and started over. But this software allowed us to get the computer back into great running condition without the need for backing up files and starting over entirely.

While I must say that the software package is great, there are a few free and low cost alternatives. However, none of them have all the features of SmartPCFixer.

For the price alone I feel the need to drop the review to a 4 out of 5 as opposed to a perfect score…

Overall, it is absolutely worth it, however, especially if your computer is in the condition that my client’s was in.
